We then took a scenic drive to our next stop - Pueblo, CO. Murals abound everywhere. A 2 hour drive south of Pueblo, we viewed the Great Sand Dunes National Park, the tallest sand dunes in North America, towering some 700 feet above the landscape. Driving the backroads provides the opportunity to not only drive at a less hectic pace, but the scenery that unfolds produces one “aahhh” after another before arriving in Durango - our last night in Colorado. Through New Mexico and northern Arizona we kept to Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) roads, mostly bereft of traffic, providing ample time to pull off to the side of the road and inhale the images of colored rock formations, billowing clouds, wildlife and domestic animals - deer, buffalo, horses, longhorn steers, llamas, sheep and goats. It just doesn’t get any better. Our final stop, Flagstaff, AZ, allowed time to take the Snow Bowl ski lift to the top of Mt. Humphreys (11,500 ft), walk the towns' streets (something as 10 year residents of Arizona, we have never done), visit the Arboretum, and hike some mountain trails. Southbound, we again forsake the Interstate in favor of a slower paced drive, taking in our last sights of tranquility before ending our drive. Finally home, this trip of 32 days and nearly 6000 miles is filed away, but not forgotten.
