Suzhou, a pleasing respite from the ever so busy and congested Shanghai, although with a large population by North American standard, has the feel of a much slower paced city. Established 2500 years ago, half a century prior to Shanghai, has and is a major economic center with a population that has exploded in this century with an influx from northern China. Although overshadowed by Shanghai, it is one of the fastest growing cities in the world being highly developed and prosperous so close to Shanghai. Retaining its’ old world charm, the city's canals, stone bridges, pagodas, and meticulously designed gardens have contributed to its status as one of the top tourist attractions in China. Suzhou is often dubbed the "Venice of the East" or "Venice of China".
Faces of Suzhou
There is an old Chinese proverb that says, “If it will happen, it will no matter your actions; if it will not happen, it will not no matter what you do.”
China, a constantly changing land, stirs my imagination of what was, that I will never see, and what will be, of which I can only imagine.
Hopefully, these faces of its' people will continue to illuminate the country's future and preserve this ancient yet modern culture.
