Another early morning departure from our hotel to visit Siena - Florence's great historical rival and one of the most beautiful cities in Tuscany. A medieval city, rich and powerful - and from the 12th to 16th century the major banking center.
We trudged through the the narrow passages viewing the structures built in red brick with elegant Gothic frames of white marble. We toured the Church of San Domenico, the Duomo (cathedral) and the Piazza del Campo one of Europe's greatest medieval squares and site of the annual famous horse race.
We bought a loaf of rustic bread, some wine and after returning to our hotel, enjoyed our repast on our hotel balcony watching daylight fade over the Tuscan hillside.
